We have President Worthen and Tom Holmoe to thank for hiring OC Grimes
Coach Grimes has so much quality experience that I doubted BYU could afford
him financially. If he was willing to take a pay cut from LSU to come to BYU for
the chance of becoming an O.C., it looks like there was a sweet spot in salary
and contract terms to be negotiated that caused BYU to stretch upward while
Coach Grimes was agreeing to whatever cut it took.

I don't think this was done with mirrors.

President Worthen and Tom Holmoe could see that the present coaching staff
was about to destroy Lavell's legacy with their laid back 'Accountable - Who? Me?'
attitude. The previous offensive line players who played for him are his best
reference point for how long this Accountable - Who? Me?' attitude will last.

Since the BYU offense didn't pass the 50 yard line once in the LSU game, which
Coach Graves saw in person from the other sideline, he already has some idea
of which coaches to replace. There is no way he'd accept the BYU job without
clear authority to bring in his own assistant coaches to replace those who
were letting the offense slide into a hole.

This is a most unusual hire for a University that makes new coaches jump
through a lot of hoops, and without a lot of salary room.

Maybe they persuaded Sitake to take a 40% cut for the duration of his
contract to reflect his 4 wins 9 loss non-leadership, in order to acquire
an assistant coach who will fire up the troops - at least on the Offensive side.

This is a brilliant hire, which I didn't think BYU could afford.

We can never know what steps President Worthen and AD Holmoe went
through, to cause this to happen.

We may not know the details, but I think we owe them both a huge THANK YOU
for making it happen, as of Dec. 14, a speed of action which is astounding giving
how slow the hiring wheels turn at BYU.

Sitake has already demonstrated that fixing all of this, was way over his head.

I wouldn't be surprised if half the entire coaching staff is replaced, starting with the
strength and conditioning coach who is not under Coach Grimes. However,
at LSU and Auburn and other places, Coach Grimes has seen multiple
strength and conditioning programs that work - without directly or indirectly
causing a staggering number of injuries.

I expect that Tom Holmoe will ask for Coach Grimes' feedback on his past
positive and negative experiences with D1 strength and conditioning programs,
since that program directly impacts offense, defense and special teams.

Coach Grimes and Coach Kafusi will be the 'old hands on deck.'

The fun part for me is that Coach Grimes has his own ideas of what a D1 QB
looks like, and so he will apply that lens to the current and future QB's in
the pipeline. The next question is whether he will keep Detmer or whether
Detmer would agree to stay. As a giant plus, if the current offensive players
were not held accountable this past year, Coach Grimes will require it of
all of them, and that may mean that Detmer could be working with a more
motivator group at every position - helping Detmer turn his ideas into
on the field production.

I love the comment from one of his former players, that Coach Grimes is
one of those coaches who is a powerful MOTIVATOR as well as someone
who is a solid teacher of TECHNIQUE at each position.

Sounds like a lot of what we've been lacking.
