There was a study — some on this board know about it more than I do — that the B1G undertook to see who they should bring in after they completed their expansion with Rutgers and Maryland. If I remember right, the study looked at all kinds of criteria, but was mostly from a financial/return on investment standpoint. According to the study (that I remember), it was BYU, no contest.
No matter what, I think everything will change by 2023-2025. With Amazon and Netflix bidding against the networks, it will be interesting how it shakes out.
One idea that I like is that the traditional concept of a conference will go away. You just don't need a conference anymore when games are available on every digital broadcast venue and fans attend games less than they used to anyway (revenue comes from broadcast not attendance). You could either have nationwide, coast-to-coast conference like the often rumored PAC 12/B1G mashup, or you can do away with conferences as currently constituted so that USC doesn't have to flip the bill Oregon State, or Clemson for Wake Forest, or Michigan for Indiana, etc.
Everything will change.
