1984 NLCS CUBS vs Padres, illegal entry to Wrigley

This story happened in Chicago in 1984 during the NLCS between the CUBS and Padres.

For game 1 of the series, my Dad and few buddy's where at the corner bar to take in the festivities. Bleacher seats that could be bought for $4 on the day of the game during the regular season were going for $250.

Around the third inning (Cubs had jumped out to a good lead) my dad and his buddy's decide to walk around the stadium and my dad noticed the team buses were parked along the right field wall. My dad told his buddy's to wait a second and he proceeded to shimmy up between two buses, until he was standing on the top of the buses. From there he was able to reach the chain link fence and he climbed over the fence into the bleachers section while the game was being played. Everyone's attention had turned away from the game to watch "the guy" (my dad) climb the fence into Wrigley Field. When my dad was in he was bombarded with fans giving him high fives and cheering him on. One guy slipped him a ticket stub, but that didn't stop security from kicking him out. The fans went nuts chanting "Don't kick him out!"

One side note, during all this happening, Tim Weigel (a sportscaster in Chicago) was in the bleachers doing a piece for the news and caught my dad climbing over the fence on tape. They used the footage of him climbing the fence as the backdrop while showing the scores to other games from the day.

My dad says he made eye contact with Tim, but didn't exchange any words with him.

So my dad is tossed from the game even though he has a ticket stub and he rejoins his buddy's who were amazed at his unorthodox yet successful entry into Wrigley Field.

The game was still going on. Cubs were leading and it was 6-7 inning by then. My dad and his 2 buddy's decided to make their way toward the front of the stadium. As they were walking, three guys came stumbling out of the press entrance to the stadium. These guys had 3 press passes valid for the entire series. These guys sold the press passes to my dad and his buddy's for $50 total.

So my dad and his buddy's enter the press box area of the stadium in the late innings of the game.

Guess who's one of the first people they see.....

Yep, Tim Wiegel. The sportscaster who less than a half hour earlier watched my dad climb over the right field wall and get kicked out by security.

My dad said the look on his face was priceless as he made the connection of where he had seen my fathers face. Tim was speechless and walked away shaking his head in disbelief.

The Cubs won game one and my dad got some great interviews with some of baseballs greats the following day before game 2.

Cubs won game 2 and then tanked it and lost the next 3 to miss facing Detroit in the World Series. Ugh!

The Cubs didn't win, but at least I have a great story to share with anyone interested to listen.
