(yeah I know long drive). I haven't had time to wade through the posts, so some of this may be SGC, but here are my observations:
1). SMC won. They played tough D and played through poor officiating (more on that later) in a hostile arena and came away with the W. Enough said. They came to play, and I was impressed.
2). BYU shot themselves in the foot at the beginning with poor shot selection. SMC was getting high percentage shots, BYU was not. I am not sure if this was mainly due to scheme, experience, or defensive pressure. Possibly a bit of all three.
3). I'm sure this has been debated to death, but I am not sure what they showed on TV. Refs sucked, period. My throat is sore from booing, and I think they deserved all they got. Throwing trash is classless and makes us look like the entitled new boy to the WCC, not a good impression. But I was fine with Boos it was that bad.
Now let's get this clear. The officiating was bad on both sides. If you don't believe this, wait a few days for the blue glasses to fade and watch again. Mainly the refs were inconsistent and the players did not know how to react. While it was bad on both sides, my blue collared glasses says it hurt BYU more because of call timing, the fact we were down, and that we couldn't get in a rhythm. This was the big difference. After poor calls (or mainly non-calls) on the, SMC end, they responded by playing through it and hitting a big shot, BYU did not. This is why some will argue the refs favored SMC heavily. I do not think they did, just that SMC handled it better. I still think they deserved all the booing they got, and hope they get some more from their superiors when the game is reviewed. And I'm sure it will be. As some have said the towel throwing was on ESPN.
The officiating took BYU players' heads out of the game, especially at the end of the half and start of the second. We lost the game here. Competent officials may have made this a very close contest, so I am still ticked at it all, but deep down I'm not sure we win because of:
4). BYU is ice (in a bad way) from 3. Credit SMC, they prevented many open looks, but the open looks we got resulted in bad shooting. Refs be darned, if BYU does not end this funk, they are going to struggle and lose a few more they shouldn't like the LMU game at home.
5) just like the Baylor loss, this game was much more fun, the Marriott again had a better atmosphere to me than any of the home football games in 2011. I love being in a conference and developing real rivalries. Here is to hoping that BYU goes B12, but if they don't at least I know hoops is in good hands, building WCC rivalries is going to be fun.
