It coincidentally ties in with the time Utah competed at all

Utah was abysmal for a solid decade. Utah becoming competitive with BYU coincidentally occurred about the same time Utah became competitive in general.

Despite what you may hope, I don't think Utah's success or surge in fan base is about BYU as much as you think it is.
