Let me say that I believe the BYU to BIG 12 is getting serious.
I know some have expressed worry of Clemson or FSU going to the BIG12 in BYU's place. Heck, I even posted some info on the matter a week or so ago.
There are some real problems that present themselves when Clemson contemplates a move and they should be big enough to put BYU fans at ease in regards to FSU and Clemson.
First, I have very good reason to believe that Clemson was approached by the BIG12 and even got the BOTs together to throughly evaluate the opportunity. With the changing landscape of college football and the amount of money being discussed, they'd be foolish not to.
Here's the problems:
After the novelty of the Big 12 wears off, Donors will begin to miss their short travels to some of their current rivals. Most Clemson Alumi can make trips to Atlanta, Raliegh, Chapel Hill, Winston Salem and Raliegh in their cars in less than 2-4 hours. That sure beats trying to find flights and ways to get to Aimes, IA, Manhatten, KS and Lobbuck TX out of Greenville, SC.
The argument is that in the new college football, travel is not as important as TV revenue dollars. Plus, Clemson can put 80,000+ in the stands when they play Coastal Carolina (who you ask, exactly!)and do not need a strong traveling opponent to sell out Death Valley. The problem is that Clemson alum just like going to the different venues that are close to home and if they jump into a new conference and that becomes a problem, logic says donations will take a hit. That's got to account for something.
Clemson also believes that if big changes were to happen, and ESPN puts together large enough financial packages to create their 4 super conferences of 16 teams, that Clemson would under no circumstances be left out of that. Meaning whether they go to the Big 12 or stay put, they are going to realize the bump in money distribution that the BIG12 is pitching one way or another.
The only circumstance that I've heard where things MIGHT get interesting is if the BIG12 waits until they have a new commissioner to expand and that commissioner is Luck. I've heard that Luck would make a big run at FSU, Clemson and Notre Dame, but I still don't see it happening.
The biggest sign that there is nothing to worry about??? Nobody in the Clemson AD or on the Clemson beat has given it a 2nd thought. Its not even being taken seriously at this point.
