and this is coming from a star wars fan, too. I love the movies, I think they're great. but they're also incredibly overrated. they are full of gaping plot holes and entirely lack any kind of internal logic. if you think about it, the first star wars movies were indicative of the career trajectory george lucas would generally follow in that he continued to mostly make movies that similarly lacked any sense of cohesion.
imo, here is what saved star wars that has not saved the latter star wars movies or movies like crystal skull:
novelty - the star wars movies were new and genre defining
great acting - harrison ford alone blew everyone away
set/costume design - you could tell that at least on this, george put in some effort, and the gritty realism of it all was important
I guess it's unfair, overall, to call them "overrated," per se. they are not overrated given their context, but they are definitely taken for granted and do not receive the criticism they deserve because of their legendary status.
imo, a better made and more influential sci-fi movie that came out at almost the exact same time, with better effects, was ridley scott's alien.
