Hine and BYU Run Away With Victory in Las Cruces

There are too many other good games this Thanksgiving weekend, so BYU is making sure this gets to as many people as possible by broadcasting it on BYUtv. ESPN is allowing a simulcast on ESPN3 as well. Many fans were fuming at this prospect and Independence until Tom Holmoe eased minds by releasing the 2013 schedule. With home dates with Wisconsin (H/H, 9/21), and Syracuse (H/H, 11/02), a road series Army (11/23), as well the annual holy war on 9/14 with Utah in Provo and the 2013 schedule is freaking awesome! (8/31 - @WSU, 09/07 vs Texas, 09/14 vs Utah,

As to the actual game the NMSU offense is supposed to be decent but somebody forgot to tell BYUs D. With the exception of one break-out run by their top RB that set up their only TD of the game NMSU essentially did nothing all night long. BYU jumped out to a 17-0 lead after one quarter. Riley hit Thompson on an out and up play for a 46 yard TD score to start the game. A great run by Hine set up a Sorenson FG. And then later in the 1st Hoffman pulled down a crazy jump ball in the end zone by Riley that was probably not the smartest play in the world but Cody can make almost any QB look good.

NMSU opened the second with their TD and seemed to be gaining momentum when Riley threw an ill-advised pick at midfield. But our D held them and Falslev makes it two years in a row with a punt return for a TD89 yards! Later in the 2nd Hine beats everyone to the corner for an 8 yard TD run and BYU goes into the half up 31-7. Riley leads one more series in the 3rd that ends in another Sorenson FG and in comes Hill. Taysom will get nearly 26 minutes of game time that will prove, hopefully, invaluable in the weeks and months to come.

Since BYU is only up 34-7 Doman still has Taysom sling it around a little and he is showing that a full season of reps is paying off. Hill nails Hoffman, then Wilson and then just misses Apo down the sideline after a series of runs. He then fakes the pitch to Hine and takes off for 28 yards before being pushed out of bounds. 2 plays later he throws the first of many future TDs when he finds Pritchard out of the backfield for the TD. Hine runs one more in the endzone in the 4th for good measure and BYU runs away with it, 48-7.

Player of the game: Hine 15 carries, 109 yards, 2 TDs, 3 rec 42 yards.
