The number of recruits they compete for is fairly small

And I still think that diehard Y kids will go to the Y regardless of what Utah does. Utah will have to be worried more about other PAC schools coming in to Utah and taking away their recruits. That is starting to happen and if Utah doesn't have success, I could see a lot of recruits leaving the state over going to BYU (unless BYU made it into the Big 12 or something similar)
