The decisions of the past haunt the future. The sad/embarrassing part of BYU athletics was in the mid to late 1990s where the ADs pushed for the WAC expansion and then the MWC. That was a time when they were thumping on the Pac 10 and winning big games. They had some wallup and could come out and punch some people in the mouth. They got a huge Nike deal, and were a big face Nationally. Those old goats sat there for 20 to 30 years and keep things easy. They could have searched for a bigger conference and better opponents, but failed to do so. Norm Chow leaving and his incident with Rhondo and the ADs set in motion some ugly things for the university. The Board made Val Hale AD. After they made Val AD, Edwards jumped ship and Val got so drunk with power, he ran it all into the ground.
What I am getting at is the fact that the university had to "clean house" or give Crowton and Hale and invite to "resign with honor." Unless you have an affair with a student or embezzle money from the university, they wont fire you. So all those old goats in the AD sat there for years without having to be accountable for their lack of pushing BYU Football into something better. They just keep doing what they always had been doing and now we paying for it BIG TIME!
BYU is pigeon holed into doing what they have always done, schedule weak big conference opponents and then go beat up on the WAC. That is a your BYU TRADITION. Foolish traditions need to change.
