He did play for BYU...
He played in 1998, the second to last year with Pullins. See: http://byucougars.com/athlete/m-baseball/jeremy-guthrie . He had mixed success his Freshman year. I've been told he was a little mentally fragile, or immature, in terms of handling pressure on the mound. I am sure the mission helped him a lot. He transferred to Stanford straight off his mission. I had heard that when Pullins left, it left the door open in his mind to transfer and he wanted more exposure. Stanford is one of the primeir college baseball teams, and is known to develop great pitchers. The rest is history.
