If I was the coach, I would say this:
"We did all we could to maintain the rivalry. It's an important game to us and our fanbase, and we would want to play Utah under any and all circumstances. Because they've put an emphasis on trying to minimize this great rivalry, we've chosen to move on with other regional/traditional rivals that are interested in scheduling long term agreements with BYU, like Boise, USU, and Hawaii. If Utah doesn't want to play on a consistent basis, it's certainly their right to not schedule the game, but it's all or nothing here for us. We're not going to be sitting by the phone waiting for them to call to schedule on years when they find it convenient or to their liking. We've moved on, and if they want to sign up to play every year as we always have, then we're open to that, but we're not going to play sporadically because we don't feel that's in our best interests. We are BYU and we won't be dictated to by a school we've always treated as an equal partner."
