US 40 from Steamboat until Soldier Summit is pretty bad. But not as bad as WY. That said, the speed limit on 40 is much lower.

If you really don't mind the extra time, you might go through Rocky Mountain Nat'l Park via Estes, CO to US 40. GREAT drive, but will add a few hours to your trip
