Interesting info from a friend who works for a local sports
radio show.
I asked my friend if it was just me, or is the local media has an axe to grind against BYU. He told me that the local sports radio guys for one reason or another just despise BYU. Most of them have an axe to grind with Mormonism. He said it also doesn't help that BYU tends to be cold towards local media. He said most of that stems from the fact that BYU does not trust the local media. They have been burned by many of them in the past. It sounds like it is mainly PK who has burned BYU in the past. Note: PK is not one of the personalities who dislike the church.
I also asked him if there is yewt bias. He told me that the university of utah sends a fairly large amount of money towards the stations. He said that between the University Credit Union, the utah MBA and athletic event commercials, that the yewts come in 1st or 2nd in advertising most months in revenue for the station. Because of that relationship, they give utah athletics a great deal of slack. Utah is also much more friendly to the local media. Mostly because the coaches and players can do an interview and run the programs how they want with very little criticism. He said that Gordon Monson is the only one who doesn't really pander to them. Sidenote: He also said that Gordon's daughters are really attractive. I wish I would have asked him how that happened.
I also asked him if BYU had a sports radio home like 1280 for the Jazz or 700 for the yewts, how well it would do. He said that it would blow the other stations out of the water. He and some of the others at the station view BYU fans as a local untapped resource. Most BYU sports fans do not listen to sports radio. I guess when Ryan Hatch ran 1280, BYU fans made up 75% of their listeners. He now thinks that it is maybe only a third of listeners are BYU fans. (He was estimating).
I asked if 1320 would be more BYU oriented to try to drive up their listeners. He said that they may, but only after they fire Kevin Graham.
