They didn't win the SEC. If they can't win the SEC, how can they win the NC? This isn't basketball where we can put 64 teams in a field for a playoff. We have to narrow it down to 4. If a team wins their conference but loses 1-2 tough games against in-conference opponents and another team loses their conference with 1 loss, I would rather see the conference champion make it than the 2nd place team.
After all, the whole point of this playoff is to find out who is #1. I hate all the debate that goes on in college football about who is better without people even playing one another. But if they have already played one another, we don't need to have a debate. We already have an answer. I like the idea of giving weight to a conference champion, but not guaranteeing a spot for a conference champ who is undeserving.
