The reason we didn't join the B8 wasn't loyalty to the UofU
The reason was because we weren't invited by the Big 8 (thanks to certain Baylor grads in the Texas governor's office, but that's a different story). BYU definitely would have accepted that invitation, and the UofU would've understood BYU's departure/de-coupling.
BYU, however, never would have gone independent as long as the UofU was in the same conference. Going indy had been considered a few times over the years, but it never was a serious option because BYU wouldn't have left the UofU behind by going indy.
