They had more recruits, the average quality of recruit was very similar. 2011 was similar. 2013 is similar as well, but the difference is that BYU has more recruits and is therefore winning the recruiting battle.
2010 was the last time that either side clearly dominated and that was BYU. The funny thing is that class isn't looking nearly as strong as we thought.
My point is Utah has gotten better recruiting over the last 10 years, but not really at the expense of BYU (yes they are getting some recruits that BYU has gotten in the past, but BYU is also getting guys like Hoffman and Apo that they never did in the past as well). BYU has been strong. I think a big reason that the stars continue to get higher is because recruiting services are actually spending more time studying the prospects in Utah. For years that wasn't really the case.
BYU gets more elite recruits from out of state than Utah because of the LDS faith.
