there is no overestimating the challenges
of the LDS newlywed college student family.

Not only is the athlete under pressure to perform on the field, the athlete in under pressure to provide for his fledgling family. The athlete is under pressure to honor his priesthood and actively fulfill any callings he has. The irony is the more he rises to the occasion in church and at home, the greater the expectation and responsibility put upon him. Add that to the normal challenges of a young marriage as you explained them Dave and where is the energy left for aggression?

Now the irony is the solution may be actually found in the challenge. Given the amount of pressure these young men are put under off the field, if I were the oline coach I would use that to my advantage. Create an visual and emotional connection to the Defense that represents all that burdens these players.

The Defense would equal the incessant crying of the baby and the smell of dirty diapers. The Defense would equal the stink eye the wife gives when she has to take a backseat to practice or playbook study. The Defense would equal the cold sexual shoulder the wife gives because she is either angry at not being the center of the universe that day or week, or she is feeling ugly and fat because she is expecting a child or she is hormonal roller coasting due to just having had a baby and needing to focus her emotional and sexual energies on nurturing the baby. The Defense would equal the number of sleepless nights due to a sick child, The Defense would equal threats to the future of the relationship (the big why am I putting myself through all of this). The Defense is the reason why they can't go out every weekend with their wives or friends because what little money there is is being used to buy diapers and breast milk pads.

You want to tap into their inner rage? Start at home and you can find all sorts of ways to rile up the linemen. Forget the machismo tactics that are oftened used as triggers. Forget team pride. Band of Brothers sure, but if you want these prematurely balding return missionary, rabbit hutch dwelling linemen to fertilize the grass of LES with the bodies of unsuspecting dlinemen, tap into that inner rage that every newlywed father and husband have boiling inside of them. Most of us purge this rage through prayer, exercise or even watching it vicariously through others during sporting events. These players might want to start saving it for game day.
