RE: So...has anyone here ever experienced Honor Code "tattling" first-hand?
My sister attended Ricks in the 90s, and her roommate claimed that my sister and her boyfriend (who happened to be the EQP in the ward) were sleeping together. My sister denied everything, of course, and pleaded with her bishop to help sort everything out. Nothing worked. The honor code office refused to name my sister's accuser and wouldn't believe her or her boyfriend. Instead, they put her on probation. For the rest of the year, guys were not allowed to enter their apartment, and my sister had weekly meetings with the honor code office to "discuss her progress." She claims it was the worst year of her life. At the end of the year, my sister's roommate admitted to the honor code office that she had made up the entire story because she was jealous that my sister was dating the EQP (apparently, she had a crush on him). Despite the fact that this roommate had lied about the entire event (and ruined my sister's year), nothing happened to her - not even a slap on the wrist. Ironically, while my sister was attending BYU the following year, she got a letter from the honor code office at Ricks formally ending her probation. No apology for making her trashing her reputation and ruining the year. Just a nice form letter.

My brother had a similar experience at BYU. Although not quite as bad, he was wrongfully accused (by an anonymous accuser, of course) and put on probation. A short time later he proved that he couldn't have done what was claimed and was released from probation.

One of my best friends got busted for sneaking into a church gym and playing baskletball late one night his freshman year. He too was subject to the honor code and was told by the honor code office that "through repentence, he could be forgiven." For playing basketball!!!

I'm all for the honor code, but the enforcement of it is absolutely backwards. It's guilty until proven innocent. I'm not suggesting that they should bend the rules - everyone who goes to BYU knows what they're signing up for - but the presumption of guilt is mind boggling. If you want to make someone's life a living hell at BYU, file a claim with the honor code whether it's legit or not.
