Inasmuch as it appears no one else wants to take the bait, I offer the following. I have been a fan of BYU for a very long time. I and my family live very near the U. Because I want my children to grow up identifying with a University I have had season tickets to the U for the past three years. As a consequence, I now have (had) a divided household. My 10 year-old daughter remembers regularly attending games at LES and (until last Saturday) considered herself a Cougar. My 5 year-old son only remembers attending UofU games and considers himself a Ute. On Saturday I took my family to the game (my daughter dressed in a blue sweater). After the game my daughter told me she is now "definitely" a Ute -- she explained that midway through the first quarter she became so offended by BYU fans' conduct that she took off her sweater and will never again cheer for BYU. Lest I sound as foolish as PonyBoy, I will not now undertake to lecture all of Cougardom on their bad behavior and call them to repentance therefor.
I share the foregoing NOT because it is a fair indictment of Cougar fans. Rather, I offer it to illustrate that PonyBoy (and other like-minded Cougar fans) are too juvenile to be credible. While I am reasonably certain PonyBoy's story is replete with hyperbole, I am equally certain the Ute fans acted inappropriately. Likewise, I am confident that some Cougar fans (perhaps PonyBoy and others who cannot engage this rivalry without expressing patently hypocritical piety) should be equally ashamed of their conduct -- for example, in the middle of the third quarter (not coincidentally a time when things were looking very bad for the Cougs) a BYU fan came down two rows over an older woman and her husband and put his hands around the neck of a vocal and obnoxious teen-age Ute fan who has turned around only seconds earlier and indiscriminately told the many BYU fans behind us to "shut up."
In short, PonyBoy should take the Y's fortuitous victory on Saturday home to his "glass house" and look forward to next year's game.
