I just sent off an email to Tom Holmoe about starting a new tradition for the football program.
Dennis Pitta is now the clear front runner for winning the John Mackey award. With Gresham and Gronkowski out for the season I feel that this is Pitta's award to lose. He already leads most categories amongst TE's nationally. This is a MAJOR national award and Pitta would deserve a TON of attention if he wins it.
If he does indeed win the Mackey award how sad would it be to see the 3rd string punter or some scout team player wearing the #32 next season. I would like to see BYU adopt the tradition of reserving the #32 for our best/starting TE each year.
Michigan reserves the #1 jersey for their top WR every year. USC reserves the #55 jersey for their top linebacker every year. I think BYU has established a phenomenal history of successful tight ends, both collegiately and in the NFL. I would love to see only our best tight end wearing the #32 year in and year out.
Plus, this makes more sense than starting a tradition around our QB's jersey numbers etc. QB's at BYU have enough pressure already trying to live up to the tradition of QB's of the past. But the tight end spot would make more sense.
What do you guys think?
