BYU Basketball Hires Stanford’s Brandon Dunson as Assistant Coach

denverpioneers.com

Kevin Young officially added the first assistant to his staff as BYU announced they have hired Stanford’s Brandon Dunson as an assistant coach.

Dunson has spent the last two seasons as a Stanford assistant, but was not retained by new head coach Kyle Smith. Prior to Stanford, Dunson served as an assistant coach at Denver, (where he was associate head coach), Cal State Fullerton, and Nevada. Prior to that he was at Stanford in a support staff role from 2016-2018 and coached at the NAIA level. Dunson played collegiately at SIU-Edwardsville, Wabash Valley College, Arizona State and Azusa Pacific.

Stanford underachieved on the court, but Dunson was a big part in bringing in a 2023 recruiting class that ranked 32 nationally and included 5-star forward Andrej Stojakovic.

Dunson is well respected in the college basketball community as a great recruiter. One source close to a guard currently in the transfer portal told me that BYU is among the top schools this player is considering with Dunson at BYU; this player would be a candidate to start for BYU.

Dunson brings good college experience to Kevin Young’s staff and gives BYU a non-LDS coach on the staff. He is a proven recruiter with ties all along the west coast.

BYU can hire up to 5 assistant coaches, 3 of which can recruit off-campus.
