JUCO DB Sione Laulea Talks BYU Offer

Laulea is a 6'4 JUCO cornerback

Earlier this week, BYU put a bow on its 2023 class with national signing day. The Cougars signed three more players to add to class of 15 other signees and multiple transfers. Now the focus turns to the class of 2024. BYU's staff has been working to identify its top targets in the 2024 class, and this week, they extended a scholarship offer to 2024 JUCO defensive back Sione Laulea. We caught up with Laulea to discuss his recent offer from BYU.

Sione is a 6'4 defensive back that was a freshman at the College of San Mateos last season, one of the top JUCO programs in the country. Laulea started as a true freshman after graduating from Junipero Serra High School in California.

BYU got in touch with Laulea through Twitter, but he already new about BYU since he is a member of the church. "Before receiving the offer, I knew the basics of BYU being Mormon and hearing a lot about them from other members at church," Laulea said. "Also especially because how they have been performing in these recent years."

There's a lot to like about Laulea as a 6'4 cornerback who runs a 10.8 100M. His recruitment has the potential to grow over the next 10 months before he signs in December, but BYU was the first to extend him a scholarship offer. "When Coach Hill called me it started off as a normal recruitment call. Before he hung up I mentioned that I was going to my Grandfather’s birthday dinner and he said 'Tell him happy birthday and that you’ve earned a scholarship to BYU'", Laulea said. "My heart sank."

Laulea is hoping to start taking visits this Spring and he has a BYU visit scheduled for March. BYU is hoping to add Laulea to the roster to help to combat the high-powered offenses that it will face in the Big 12. There's a long ways to go before Laulea has to make his college decision, but being the first scholarship offer gives BYU a good chance to be in the running.
