SUU Goes 0-12 From Three, Falls Short Of Upset Against BYU

PROVO, Utah – Southern Utah was unsuccessful in upsetting another program and went 0-12 from three-point range in their loss at BYU.

The T-Birds fell 68-63 to the Cougars on Wednesday, November 13.

Southern Utah shot 50 percent from the field against BYU but ultimately going 0-12 from downtown proved fatal in the Thunderbirds upset attempt.

After BYU held the lead for much of the game, SUU took control a few minutes into the second half when Jakolby Long tied the game at 43 with 14:48 left in the game.

The Thunderbirds maintained the edge over BYU for more than five minutes but a BYU 10-0 run late in the game put the Cougars on top for good.

Southern Utah attempted three shots from downtown in the final 10 minutes of the game but missed them all. The T-Birds were unable to capitalize as BYU guard TJ Haws sat on the bench in foul trouble for a large portion of the second half.

SUU’s Dre Marin missed a potential game-tying three-pointer with 17 seconds left and the Cougars closed the game with a couple of free throws.

“Obviously ya know disappointing,” said SUU head coach Todd Simon on his thoughts after the game. “We feel like this is a game we could and should have won.”

John Knight III led the Thunderbirds with 22 points off of the bench. He also added 6 rebounds, 1 assist, and a steal.

Andre Adams led the SUU starters with 12 points and 3 boards.

Southern Utah committed 18 turnovers in the defeat.

The Thunderbirds fell to 2-1 on the season with the loss. SUU’s previous game was a successful upset against Nebraska.

SUU stays on the road for their next game. The T-Birds face the UCLA Bruins on November 18 at 9 p.m. (MDT). The game is broadcast on the Pac-12 Network.
