Las Vegas, NV – Do you remember that scene from Space Jam when the MonStars are just scoring at will and the scoreboard starts adding points at lightspeed and eventually it just says, “This is really getting out of hand.” That’s how it felt during this game when BYU got down in the second half by 44 points.

No that’s not a typo, 44 points to the No. 7 seed seed San Diego.

This is a game that I couldn’t believe my eyes and ears. From the starting tip when San Diego went on a 13 to 0 run and Isaiah Wright had 11 of those and some tough triples to boot as well, to the final horn when after some fight from the boys on the bench from BYU made it a more respectable score, this game was never in doubt.

San Diego had contributions from all over the place but stud senior Isaiah Pineiro came in clutch with 27 points and 12 boards to pace the Toreros. Finn Sullivan was huge of the bench with a career night scoring 17 points. San Diego shot the ball quite well with 49% from the field and 41.2% from downtown. But 88.5% from the free throw line hitting 23-26 will get the job done.

For BYU, it was a historically bad night. They now hold the single worst 3pt shooting percentage in WCC tournament play at 5.9% or 1-17. That is just plain awful. A 19-point first half that transitioned into a terrible first 8 minutes of the second half sealed the Cougars fate. Yoeli Childs and T.J Hawes finished the game shooting 8-30 for a combined 24 points.

This is the first quarterfinal exit for the Cougars since 2013 when the Cougs lost to, you guessed it, San Diego.

San Diego will advance to Monday’s game against Saint Mary’s.

BYU Basketball will wait to see if they get invited to the NIT or another post season tournament, but many fans can’t help but question if they have seen the last of Yoeli Childs, or possibly even Head Coach Dave Rose.
