BYU softball will begin its NCAA regional play against No. 13 Oklahoma after receiving an automatic bid for claiming another WCC title, the team’s 11th consecutive conference championship.
BYU finished the 2018-19 regular season with a 12-3 record in WCC play and a 29-24 record overall. This will mark the program’s 15th consecutive NCAA regional appearance and 16th total. Over this 15-year run, BYU softball has only made it past the first round of regionals once, which ultimately resulted in a loss to No. 3 Arizona during the 2010 super regionals.
The NCAA softball tournament is set up differently than most collegiate tournaments. Regionals occur over a three-day span and consist of four teams that play on 16 different campus sites. Regionals are double-elimination, and only one team advances to the next round — the super regionals.
Super regionals consist of the 16 teams that won their respective regionals. This stage of the tournament is a three-game series, with the eight winners advancing to the NCAA Women’s College World Series.
BYU will start its regional against No. 13 Oklahoma State (39-14) on Thursday, May 16, in Stillwater, Oklahoma. The Cougars will also play Arkansas (38-18) and Tulsa (35-18) in their double-elimination regional.
