PROVO, Utah – Whenever a recruit officially signs their letter of intent to play for the BYU football program, that recruit gets an edit on social media that reads, “Welcome To The Family!”
Every college football program preaches a family atmosphere, but for head coach Kalani Sitake it’s truly been the foundation of his program in recruiting. Any recruit that receives interest from BYU will tell you they enjoy the “family atmosphere” with the Cougars.
The BYU football family is one that stretches worldwide and has produced generations of talented players from individual families, including the Tuipulotu’s.
BYU football received a commitment in the class of 2020 from the latest member of the Tuipulotu family, Petey Tuipulotu, a wide receiver/safety prospect out of Fort Mill, South Carolina.

Petey is the son to former BYU great Peter Tuipulotu who played for the Cougars during the Ty Detmer glory years from 1987-1991. Petey’s older brothers, Hank, a current tight end on the BYU football team who recently suffered a season-ending ACL injury, and Benjamin Tuipulotu who is currently serving a mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Benjamin will join the BYU football program next summer after completion of his mission to Chile.
Tuipulotu went to his personal Twitter account to announce his commitment to the BYU football program and his new football family.
The dual-position athlete said in his commitment post, “First off, I want to give huge thanks to my parents for always being there for me and making me work hard. I also want to thank my siblings for setting great examples for me and pushing me to my full potential. I want to thank BYU Football and all of the coaching staff for giving me this opportunity to fulfill my dream and become a Cougar,” said Tuipulotu.
Last season at Nation Ford High School, Tuipulotu recorded 57 tackles in eight games played and also had 232 all-purpose yards on the offensive side of the ball. Tuipulotu projects to be a defensive back at BYU when he enrolls in either 2020 or 2022, depending on if he has plans to serve a mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
BYU now has 15 total commitments for the class of 2020. The early signing period begins on December 18th.
Here are Tuipulotu’s highlights from his junior season at Nation Ford High School.
