KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – BYU’s first win of the 2019 football season came in thrilling fashion. The Cougars beat the Tennessee Volunteers 29-26 in double overtime. The Cougars trailed for most of the game, but big plays in the final minutes pushed them to the win.
Two players that came up big were seniors Micah Simon and Ty’Son Williams. Simon hauled in a 64-yard pass in the final seconds of regulation to set up a game-tying field goal from Jake Oldroyd while Williams delivered the game winning touchdown in double overtime.
Even though Williams delivered the game-winner, it wasn’t his performance he was talking about after the game. His focus was on the big catch from his roommate, Micah Simon.
“I was happy to see him make that play,” said Williams. “The odds were stacked against us. He made a play, I was hoping he’d score but he got us in great position to get a field goal and send the game to overtime.”
Head coach Kalani Sitake was thrilled for Simon as well. Simon has emerged as a leader for Sitake’s program over the last two seasons following a disappointing 4-9 record in 2017.
“Micah knows I love him. He’s been an amazing leader for this team,” said Sitake. “The culture is thriving right now because of these players.”
Williams is new to BYU, joining the program this offseason as a graduate transfer, but through two games he’s made his impact known and has stepped up as a leader for the Cougars. Against Tennessee he rushed for 92 yards and two touchdowns.
“I love Ty’Son,” said Simon. “It’s been great to have him on this team and to make a difference.”
