PROVO, Utah – On Thursday night, the BYU Women’s Soccer clinched the SEC Championship.

No, the Cougars aren’t members of the Southeastern Conference, they are proud members of the West Coast Conference. But with Thursday’s 2-0 win over No. 12 Texas A&M, the Cougars should claim to be the best of the SEC. As BYU moved to a perfect 3-0 against schools from the SEC on the season.

One of the objectives of BYU head coach Jen Rockwood has always been to have her program prove themselves against the best. The Cougars have done just that and they did it style against an A&M squad that hadn’t allowed a goal since the opening night of the season back on August 22nd.

BYU (5-0) proved that they are one of the best teams in the country with a dominating win over the Aggies (4-1) in front of an energetic crowd of 3,712 fans at BYU’s historic and picturesque South Field.

BYU senior forward Elise Flake continues to be a star for the Cougars. Flake scored both goals in BYU’s big win.

The first goal coming in the 34th minute off an assist from junior Josie Guinn. Then three minutes later, with some fancy footwork, Flake booted her second and final goal of the night to give BYU a commanding lead.

“We want to go at them as hard as we could, right from the beginning,” said Jen Rockwood. “We take a lot of pride in our attack right now. We have such dangerous attacking players. We’ve spent a lot of time encouraging them to use their skills of 1-v-1 attacking. Again, that’s sometimes your best defense is when you make your opponents play more defense then they are used to … I’m just really proud of the girls and the way they played. Fun game to watch, great crowd, great atmosphere, against a very solid team from A&M. They are going to win a lot of games this year. This is a huge win for us.”

Flake now has six goals on the season and has scored in every game since the goals second match of the season at Mississippi State. She’s now tied for seventh nationally for most goals by one player so far in the 2019 season.

BYU’s defense continues to be suffocating for their opponents. The Cougars have allowed only one goal this season and that was on the road against Mississippi State. With Thursday night’s performance against A&M, BYU has now shutout their opponent in three consecutive games.

The Cougars are 5-0 for the first time to open a season since the 2010 campaign.

BYU’s next game

Next up for BYU is a road match down University Ave. against the 2-4 Utah Valley Wolverines. Kickoff for BYU vs. UVU is Monday, September 16th at 7:30 p.m.
