PROVO — BYU’s football players will be wearing alternate uniforms when they take the field at LaVell Edwards Stadium against No. 22 Washington on Saturday afternoon.

Also, the field will include a “retro scheme,” according to a school news release, with painted end zones featuring a diamond-shaped pattern used in the 1960s.

The field will also feature the official “College Football 150” logos at midfield as BYU continues the commemoration of 150 years of college football.

After a good amount of speculation and rumors on social media the past few months, the Cougars unveiled the new look through their BYU Football Twitter account on Tuesday afternoon, then followed that announcement with the news release.

Saturday’s game, to be televised locally by ABC and in other parts of the U.S. by ESPN2, is BYU’s annual “white-out” game and fans are encouraged to wear white.

The new jerseys are being billed as throwbacks, with royal blue stripes and numbers on a white jersey top background. The pants are royal blue. It is a nod to BYU’s great teams of the past, according to the school.

Gone from the helmets are the traditional stretch Y logo and in its place — for this game only — is the original block Y that adorned Cougar helmets in the 1960s.

The socks are slightly different, too, with two royal blue stripes.

Coincidentally, or not, BYU athletic director Tom Holmoe tweeted Tuesday that BYU has a “great relationship” with Nike and has the shoe and apparel giant design the uniforms for all its sports teams.

In addition to the throwback uniforms and end zone, former players Ty Detmer, Mo Elewonibi, Jason Buck and Derwin Gray will be in attendance and lead the pregame Cougar Walk as well as carry the alumni flags onto the field pregame.

The cheer squad and Cougarettes will don retro uniforms, a “vintage” Cosmo the Cougar will make an appearance, vintage throwback apparel will be available for purchase and hot dogs will be sold for just $2.
