PROVO — Is BYU on the verge of giving fourth-year football coach Kalani Sitake a contract extension?

It certainly appears the school is leaning in that direction, after athletic director Tom Holmoe was caught on video wearing a T-shirt in the BYU locker room with #EXTENDKALANI on it.

The video of Holmoe wearing the T-shirt was posted on Instagram by former BYU receiver Neil Pau’u shortly after the Cougars’ 42-10 win over Idaho State on Saturday afternoon, a win that made the Cougars bowl eligible with a 6-4 record.

BYU accepted an invitation to play in the SoFi Hawai’i Bowl at Aloha Stadium on Dec. 24 after the game. Its third bowl in four seasons under Sitake, who now has a 26-23 overall record at BYU.

BYU officials did not immediately respond to questions regarding Holmoe’s choice of apparel in the postgame locker room. The video shows Holmoe hugging Sitake after addressing the team.

Several players wore the T-shirts on the sidelines during the game, including running back Lopini Katoa, who missed the game with an injury.

Sitake’s current contract runs through the 2020 season. However, most schools generally extend coaching contracts the year prior to current contracts expiring, if they plan to offer the extension.

Players such as linebackers Chaz Ah You and Isaiah Kaufusi have spoken publicly about their desire to see Sitake’s contract extended.

BYU has won four straight games after a 2-4 start and will play at UMass next Saturday.
