alt=Jeff CallSAN FRANCISCO — Amid a difficult 83-82 loss to San Francisco, BYU guard TJ Haws reached a couple of historical milestones Saturday afternoon at War Memorial Gym.
Haws recorded his 123rd consecutive start, the most in school history, surpassing Jeff Chatman’s 122 straight.
Then, midway through the first half, Haws knocked down a 3-pointer to give him eight points to eclipse Mekeli Wesley and jump into the top 10 in scoring at BYU. Haws entered the day needing eight points to move into 10th place.
Haws finished with 20 points in the Cougars’ setback to USF. He now has 1,753 career points.
On top of that, Haws is also fourth in 3-point field goals, ninth in steals and fifth in assists all-time at BYU.
Haws’ older brother, Tyler, is the Cougars’ all-time leading scorer with 2,720 career points. Tyler Haws holds the school record for total games started at 137.
“I’m going to credit this Haws DNA. Marty and Tiffanie Haws must be extraordinary people because their boys are incredible,” coach Mark Pope said earlier this week. “I got a chance to coach Tyler when he was here and he refused to be denied. He worked harder than maybe any player I’ve been around in my life. TJ’s way different than Ty. But it’s pretty remarkable. You think about doing anything more and better and longer than anybody in the history of BYU has done it, that’s really hard to do. There’s a museum of great players here. The fact that TJ is trying to peek through that door is pretty special.”
