#2 BYU men’s volleyball beat Grand Canyon Friday night in straight sets — 25-22, 25-18, 28-26. The win takes BYU to 13-0 on the season, their second best start to a season.

BYU did it without Gabi Garcia Fernandez, who had the night off, although no detail was reported about his absence from the floor. Alex Ah Sue was great in Gabi’s absence and helped the Cougars early in the first set with two aces.

Zach Eschenberg was also important for the Cougars, leading the team with 10 kills. Davide Gardini also had 9 kills on the night.

BYU opened the first set well before a quick turnaround by the Lopes created a tight set. BYU eventually came out winners 25-22.

The second set was better from BYU, who went on a 10-2 run to take a 17-9 lead. BYU would coast to a second-set win with a score of 25-18.

The third set was a battle, with the Lopes taking a late lead at 24-23 before BYU scored the next two. The Lopes and Cougars traded the next few points, before BYU finally won the set 28-26.

BYU’s MPSF schedule continues Thursday, Feb. 20, with Concordia-Irvine coming to Provo followed by a home match against USC on Saturday evening.
