PROVO, Utah – If BYU basketball needs to dig deeper into their bench, they have another player suddenly available in guard/forward Brandon Warr.
Warr, a transfer from Division II Westminster, was expected to sit out this season due to NCAA transfer rules for DII players. The NCAA recently granted Warr a waiver, allowing him to play his first minutes as a BYU Cougar on Thursday night in the blowout win over Portland.

“You know, it’s really special because it’s a free season,” said BYU basketball head coach Mark Pope. “As soon as the NCAA came out with that, we put in papers to see if we can get him a waiver. He’s done a great job for us.
“He’s been working so hard every single day playing every position from the two to the five, and every possession during practice. I’m super happy to see him get in, and he grabbed two rebounds, and he’s a plus-three in plus-minus. That’s hard to do in two minutes and 30 seconds; he had a terrific first outing.”
Warr finished the night with two rebounds and no shot attempts.
At Westminster, the 6-foot-5, 210-pound Warr led the Griffins last season in scoring, averaging 15.3 points per game. He also averaged 8.9 rebounds and shot 42.5 percent from the field and 37 percent from the three-point line.
BYU basketball is 12-3 overall on the 2020-21 season and 3-1 in West Coast Conference play. The Cougars are back in action on Saturday night when they host the Pepperdine Waves at 8 p.m. on an ESPN Network and KSL NewsRadio.
