SALT LAKE CITY — Jake Toolson's rookie season with the Salt Lake City Stars has come to an abrupt end.
The former BYU and Utah Valley wing was waived by the G League affiliate of the Utah Jazz on Sunday, just days after suffering a foot injury that proved to be season-ending.
Toolson, a 6-foot-5 affiliate player who signed a training camp contract with the Jazz last fall, had 5 points and two rebounds in the Stars' 117-98 loss to the Erie Bayhawks in the Feb. 10 season opener. In that game, which also saw Toolson's former BYU teammate Yoeli Childs finish with 11 points, five rebounds and two steals, the Stars also saw Jazz rookie Udoka Azubuike go down late with an ankle injury in the final minutes of the game.
Azubuike, a 6-10, 280-pound center from Kansas who was on assignment from the Jazz, is out indefinitely with what the Stars called a severe ankle sprain. No timetable is set for his recovery, but the Jazz said he is expected to return to Utah rather than remain in the G League bubble during his recovery.
Toolson signed with the Stars as an affiliate player after being waived in the final days of Jazz preseason. To fill the BYU alum's spot on the roster, the Stars added former San Diego State guard Dakari Allen. The 6-5, 193-pound Allen appeared in 43 games last season for the Grand Rapids Drive in the NBA G League, when he averaged 7.9 points, 3.2 rebounds and 2.5 assists.
Allen started his professional career with the Stars after winning a spot via local tryout in 2017-18. He appeared in 27 games, including seven starts, for Salt Lake City that season.
Coming off a 97-84 win over the Iowa Wolves, the Stars (1-2) face the Memphis Hustle at 9 a.m. MST Monday at the ESPN Wide World of Sports campus near Orlando, Florida. The Hustle (1-1) are led by former Utah State guard Sam Merrill, a second-round draft pick by the Milwaukee Bucks who is averaging 9.7 points on 33% shooting on his G League assignment.
