BYU RB Tyler Allgeier Appears On Two Preseason Awards Lists

PROVO, UtahΒ – BYU loses a lot from last yearβs 11-1 team, but they return the top running back from that squad in Tyler Allgeier.
Allgeier, a former preferred walk-on, who bounced around both the offensive and defensive sides of the ball early in his BYU career, has now emerged as the face of the running back position for BYU.

Heading into the 2021 season, Allgeier finds himself on some preseason award watch lists.
Tyler Allgeier on Maxwell, Doak Walker watch lists
The Fontana, California, native is on both the Maxwell Award and Doak Walker Award preseason watch lists.
The Maxwell Award is given to college footballβs best all-around athlete, while the Doak Walker Award goes to the top running back in the sport.

Allgeier put up huge numbers for BYU in his breakout season. The sophomore running back rushed for 1,130 yards last season, averaging 7.53 yards per attempt. He rushed for 13 touchdowns, which was 10th most in all of college football.
Allgeier will spotlight the BYU offense this season as the Cougars look to replace Zach Wilson at quarterback. If the passing game isnβt having the success they were accustomed to last year, Allgeier could be the workhorse for the BYU offense.
The BYU football program has never had a player win the Maxwell Award. But the Cougars have had a Doak Walker winner.
Twenty years ago, BYU legend Luke Staley won the Doak Walker Award in 2001. That season, Gary Crowtonβs first year as head coach, Staley ran for 1,582 yards on 196 carries in only 11 games. Staley averaged 8.1 yards per carry.
So if Allgeier wants a chance at winning the Doak or Maxwell, heβs going to need even more yards this year than what he put up a season ago.
