VIDEO: Big 12 Has Discussed Adding BYU, according to ESPN Analyst

Texas and Oklahoma have informed the Big 12 they are leaving and will apply to the SEC, meaning the Big 12 is in limbo as each school scrambles to survive without the conference’s flagship members. The Big has discussed adding schools, and according to ESPN’s Heather Dinich, they’ve discussed adding BYU, Cincinnati and Houston.

“They (Big 12) obviously want to keep it going, and who do they grab?” Dinich said on ESPN’s Get Up show. “I can tell you, last week, they talked on a shallow surface of, ‘What do we do if Oklahoma and Texas leave?’ And they talked about Cincinnati, Houston and BYU. They’re all great programs, but none that obviously bring the value of Oklahoma and Texas and those brand names, right?”

Many dominoes still need to fall before BYU can really decide what they will do. If the Big 10 raids the Pac 12, then that could set off another waive of scrambling and realignment. If the Big 12 does stay together, their current TV deal would be significantly less than the ~$35M each school makes annually. If they can get around $15M, that would give BYU a pay bump and a conference ally in its corner as the college football landscape continues to change. Basketball doesn’t drive these decisions, but BYU would also join an elite basketball conference with Kansas, Baylor, and others. Maybe BYU could convince Gonzaga to join?

Whatever the case may be, the days and weeks ahead should be eventful.
