BYU Women’s Volleyball Sweeps Utah, Soccer Continues Offensive Domination

It’s been a good week for BYU athletics.

First, last Friday BYU accepted an invite to join the Big 12, finalizing BYU’s long dream of Power Five status.

The next day, BYU finally beat Utah and ended the streak. It was twelve years in the making and they finally did it.

Thursday night, BYU’s excellent week continued, as the women’s volleyball team swept number 10 Utah at the Smith Fieldhouse.

The last time the Cougars played Utah, they were upset in the NCAA Tournament at the Smith Fieldhouse as the Utes swept the Cougars in a massive upset. This time, the Cougars came in as underdogs against Utah for the first time in several years, but came out on top to get their revenge.

It wasn’t easy as the Cougars won the first two sets 25-23. The second set looked to be comfortable, but the Utes came scorching back to make it interesting late. The Cougars snuck out the set win and opened the match up 2-0 against the Utes.

The third set was much more comfortable for the Cougars, as they went on to win 25-16. The Cougars will likely move up in the rankings this next week, but will need to have a win at UVU on Saturday to ensure they move up.

Olympic sports have also had a good week, as the women’s soccer team has won their last two home games at South Field and have scored 7 goals in three straight home games. They beat Missouri in a 7-4 win which saw the Cougars get a bit comfortable late, and then smashed Idaho State 7-0 on Thursday evening. They will host Utah State on Friday at 6 PM.

Extramural sports also had a good week, with the men’s soccer and hockey teams picking up in-state wins. BYU Men’s soccer, who hasn’t lost an in-state game since their return to club soccer, beat Utah 5-0 in front of a record crowd at South Field. Two goals from Eli Holmstead in the first 20 minutes gave the Cougars a comfortable lead, before Christian Bain, Nate Mumford, and Carter Olson added second half goals to give the Cougars a 5-0 win. Hockey also played in-state foes, beating Utah State in a come from behind win 6-4 at Peaks Ice Arena. They then beat UVU 5-2 on Thursday night. They host Utah on Saturday at Peaks Arena.
