Baylor Romney just keeps winning.

Once again, the sophomore QB stepped to lead BYU to victory as the 6-foot-2, 195-pounder threw for 305 yards and three touchdowns to lead the Cougars to a 35-27 win Saturday night at LaVell Edwards Stadium.

Romney, who was making just his third career start, looked good right from the start as he hit his brother Gunner Romney for a 49-yard pass on the second play of the game. Baylor Romney capped off the drive with a 5-yard TD pass to Masen Wake.

On the second possession, Baylor Romney threw another deep ball as he hit Puka Nacua for a 55-yard gain which led to another BYU touchdown.

At one point in the game, Baylor Romney couldn’t miss as he completed 12 consecutive passes, helping BYU race out to a big lead (28-6) as the Cougars scored four touchdowns on just five possessions in the first half.

BYU Deserves A Top 10 Ranking — Here’s Why

The win helped the Cougars set another record as well as it was the first time in program history that BYU has been 4-0 in back-to-back seasons. A big part of that streak has come from BYU’s home field advantage as the Cougars have now won 14 consecutive games at home. BYU will have a chance to make it 15 in a row on Oct. 9 against Boise State.

With the win, BYU has now won 250 games at LaVell Edwards Stadium since it was built in 1964 and is just one of 26 undefeated FBS teams. BYU is also just one of six FBS programs that has never trailed in a game this season. The others are Alabama, Army, Georgia, Michigan and Ole Miss.

Stars

Baylor Romney — The sophomore QB finished the game completing 20 of 25 passes for a career high 305 yards Saturday night. His three touchdown passes also tied a career high. The sophomore was efficient and the stats proved it as Romney finished with a pass efficiency rating of 222.08. That was the best since Zach Wilson’s performance against Louisiana Tech (222.7) last season, as well as Wilson’s perfect game in the 2018 Idaho Potato Bowl.

Baylor Romney is now 3-0 in his three career starts (Boise State, Liberty, USF). The sophomore QB has also thrown for multiple touchdowns in each of those games: USF (3), Liberty (3) and Boise State (2). The gunslinger has now completed 69% of his passes (58 of 84) for 788 yards and eight TDs in those games.

The Cougars are in good hands if Hall is out an extended period of time. But if Romney keeps this performance up, there could be a QB battle brewing in Provo.

Wide Receivers — Baylor and Gunner Romney were just playing pitch and catch Saturday night as the duo teamed up for several big plays. Gunner finished the night with a game-high five catches for 119 yards and a touchdown. It was his first 100-yard game this season and fifth of his career.

Puka Nacua also chipped in with 102 receiving yards, including the longest play of the night with a 55-yard catch in the first quarter. It was also the first time that the sophomore recorded more than 100 receiving nights in his college career. He previous high was 97 yards against Arizona when he was at Washington.

Up next: BYU travels to Logan to take on Utah State (3-1) in the battle for the Wagon Wheel. The Cougars last played the Aggies in 2019 and came away with a 42-14 road victory.
