BYU added another player to the quarterback competition as Utah State transfer McCae Hillstead committed to BYU. Hillstead will be a sophomore this coming season.

A Skyridge HS (Lehi, Utah) product, Hillstead had a productive freshman season at Utah State. Hillstead started 4 of 8 games he played in, throwing for 1,062 yards, 11 TDs, and 8 interceptions with a 59.5% completion percentage. Hillstead’s best game came versus James Madison, one of the best G5 teams last season. In that game Hillstead threw for 399 yards, 4 TDs, and 3 interceptions in a 45-38 loss.

Hillstead is undersized at 5-foot-10, but was a very productive high school quarterback and has quality D1 experience. One of the main knocks on Hillstead has been his injury history. Hillstead has been effective when healthy but has missed time due to injury.

Hillstead enters a crowded QB room that includes Jake Retzlaff, Gerry Bohanon, Treyson Bourquet, Cade Fennegan, Ryder Burton, Noah Lugo, and Cole Hagen. Retzlaff and Bohanon are the presumptive favorites to start, but Hillstead at minimum gives additional experience and depth to the room.

You can watch a few highlights of Hillstead below.
