Kevin Young is hiring a familiar name (to him) as sources tell me BYU is set to hire Nevada Assistant Athletic Director Doug Stewart as Chief of Staff.

The chief of staff is something that could evolve over time, but part of the responsibilities will be to help manage NIL and advising in other capacities. This is not one of the five assistant coach positions.

A longtime assistant in college hoops, Stewart was an assistant to Kevin Young for the Delaware 87ers in the NBA G-League during the 2014-2015 NBA Season. Young said the following about Stewart in 2015 when he left the 87ers to take a job with Nevada under Eric Musselman.

“Doug Stewart is first, a great person, and second a very smart basketball coach who is always thinking the game. He has a great feel for the game offensively, and defensively and knows how to convey his thoughts. Player development comes natural for Coach Stewart because of the way he’s able to connect and communicate with players - players love to work with him.”

Stewart has been an assistant AD at Nevada since 2022, but has 20 years of collegiate coaching experience prior to that.

  • Tulane, Associate Head Coach — 2016-2020
  • Nevada, Associate Head Coach — 2015-2016
  • Delaware 87ers, Assistant Coach — 2014-2015
  • Oregon State, Associate Head Coach — 2008-2014
  • Brown, Associate Head Coach — 2006-2008
  • Casper College, Head Coach (JUCO) — 2004-2006
  • Columbia University, Assistant Coach — 2003-2004

Stewart played collegiately for Brown and professionally as a player-coach for the Washington Generals (longtime opponent of the Harlem Globetrotters) from 1994-1999.

Stewart isn’t one of the 5 assistants, but he provides Young with a familiar confidant and someone with extensive experience as both a college administrator and coach.

BYU already has Brandon Dunson officially on staff and has added Chris Burgess.
