He's an acquaintance...a Timpview and BYU grad, and a close friend to the Chow's. When Hawaii was in town this last fall, I visited with him and he came right out and said that Chow does not want to play BYU because of the recruiting angle. He said the BYU game sells a lot of tickets and creates a lot of buzz on the island, and for that reason the AD was in favor of the BYU series. But, he said, bringing BYU to the islands on a continual basis also places Hawaii's greatest recruiting foe in their backyard, and he said Norm REALLY needs to secure the local talent if Hawaii is to be successful.
Now, I don't know if this is the main reason the series was cancelled. Maybe the championship game was the greatest factor in cancelling the series, but I have to believe that Norm's strong opinions also played a significant factor in negotiations.
For the record, I don't really blame Chow. UH is a disaster, and it makes little sense to schedule BYU in their current state. 1) They can't afford to lose local talent to BYU. 2) BYU is not the calibre of non-conf team Hawaii needs to play; they should either schedule a "Weber State", or go for the BIG money and travel to an Alabama.
