Because I'm possibly the biggest Carlino fanboy on the board....
I skipped my normal run at lunch and compiled the following statistical analysis comparing Matt Carlino to every Cougar PG for the past 20 years.. First of all, negative props to Cougarstats for getting rid of their basketball section (or hiding it so that a technilogically impaired persone such as myself couldn't find it). I had to use the stats on BYU Cougars.com, and I only went back to 1992. I'm willing to concede that Ainge, Call, Santiago, and Haws were better than Carlino - so there was really no need to go farther back than 1992. Also you'll note I excluded the years 2008-2010, but I'm pretty sure we had a PG that was better than Carlino during those years . That being said, here are the stats for every "primary" point guard for BYU for the past 20, non-Jimmer years (some years, we did not have a "true" point, so I used the player that led us in assists that year - Whiting in 00, Robbie Ried in '94

92 - Randy Reid .381FG, 6.2ppg, 4.1apg, 1.58a/to
93 - Randy Reid .517FG, 11.8ppg, 2.7apg, 1.67a/to
94 - Robbie Reid .388FG, 10.1ppg, 4.9apg, 1.71a/to
95 - Randy Reid .416FG, 11.2ppg, 5.1apg, 2.8a/to
96 - Montague .380FG, 6.2ppg, 5.0apg, 1.28a/to
97 - Dignan .365FG, 3.8ppg, 4.0apg, 1.29a/to
98 - Vranes .433FG, 10.9ppg, 2.9apg, .94a/to
99 - Montague .400FG, 3.0ppg, 3.8apg, 1.86a/to
00 - Whiting .432FG, 14.2ppg, 2.3apg, 1.24a/to
01 - Montague .423FG, 6.2ppg, 7.0apg, 2.65a/to
02 - Woodberry .354FG, 6.3ppg, 2.5apg, 1.40a/to
03 - Lemes .441FG, 8.7ppg, 4.5apg, 1.92a/to
04 - Ainge .429FG, 9.5ppg, 4.0apg, 1.28a/to
05 - Broadus .393FG, 9.0ppg, 3.7apg, 1.39a/to
06- Ainge .456FG, 7.9ppg, 4.4apg, 1.90a/to
07 - Murdock .333FG 3.9ppg, 3.6apg, 2.40a/to
11 - Carlino .401FG 12.2ppg, 4.6apg, 1.53a/to
12 - Carlino .418FG 11.2ppg, 4.4apg, 1.87 a/to

So in the past 20 years, 2 BYU PG's managed a better scoring average than Carlino's 11.2 this year (only 1 better than his 12.2 last year). His 4.4 apg would rank 6th over that timeframe, and his 1.87 assist to turnover ratio would rank 6th as well. And as much as he has a reputation as a low accuracy volume shooter, his .418 FG% would be 8th on this list. All this from a Sophmore looks pretty good to me.

Now if Matt doesn't make significant improvements next year, I'll be willing to listen to the naysayers, but for right now, I don't want to hear about how posters will take nearly any point guard from the past 20 years over Carlino - that's just silly.
