A meta analysis was done of 12 peer reviewed publications. Results indicated that mothers who delivered at home where 1/2 as likely to undergo interventions, there was no difference in mother mortality, no difference in early neonatal death(7days) but a three fold increase in late neonatal death(up to 28 days) in planned home birth. I would caution in using this as sole justification as patient self selected ie healthy mothers with uncomplicated pregnancies tend to deliver at home and woman that delivered at the hospital also included mothers with known complications (breech, placenta preevia, hypertension etc).
