Revisited again: Anae: "Pass on every 1st down, run on every 2nd down..."

IndyCoug's front page analysis got me thinking...how did Anae's philosophy change over time at BYU?

So I did some analysis of BYU's play-calling during Anae's tenure relative to the rest of the NCAA (see image below). I think there are some interesting trends on 1st and 2nd down (the other downs seem to be more a function of the team's performance and have more noise from year to year).

  • Anae clearly trended toward more balance during 1st and 2nd down while at BYU. In 2005, his pass rate was well above the NCAA average for 1st and 2nd down. By 2010, his pass rate was below the NCAA average for 1st down and only slightly above the NCAA average for 2nd down.
  • IndyCoug is right that Anae's strategy didn't follow the "pass on every 1st down, run on every 2nd down" pattern that some have complained about, but his play-calling on 1st down definitely got more predictable over time (he ran increasingly more on 1st down over time).

Of course, these trends might be driven by the skillset of the players Anae coached over these years, although that doesn't seem likely to explain the clear downward trends in pass rate on 1st and 2nd down over time.

Anyways, I'm excited to see what these numbers look like for 2013-- Go Cougars!
