My personal history on regional rivalries
As a kid, I was a Nuggets fan (still am) because I grew up in Denver. The one team in the NBA that I despised was the Utah Jazz. Why? Well I had a lot of cousins that liked them and when I became a teenager the Jazz had the better team. It was always that "dirty" Stockton and "roid rager" Malone.

Fast forward 15-20 years and I have no problem with the Jazz. At times I feel bad for them because they are in such a small market and the deck is stacked against them (although you can certainly overcome that, see San Antonio Spurs). I certainly still cheer for the Nuggets over the Jazz, but I have nothing against the Jazz. Could it be because the Jazz haven't been that good in awhile? I guess, but I don't have a real hatred for any team. I do still hate certain players, but players change teams so often it is hard to root against a team.

I honestly think the regional rivalries are a thing of the past. You are just as likely to have a Red Wings/Avalanche (they aren't even in the same conference anymore and I still cheer against those commie _____!) because of something that actually happens in a game than you are to care about a team based on where they are at. Based on the NBA, there aren't really any strong regional rivalries in the game. If you opened it up to the best 16 teams there is just as good of a chance that Cleveland/Clippers would develop a rivalry as anything that you currently have in the NBA.
