These two stats during the BYU @ Michigan game is telling...

In this case, this is pretty good. Means we had a running game and BYU short yardage package is working. Of course, this should be higher (65%) so that would allow more non predictability (teams know BYU will run in short yardage), but BYU could use a TE in that instance as well, which will prove just as effective, especially on a delayed route.

3rd and short will mean under 10 yards. In this graphic during the game, BYU was sitting at a 3rd and 2. So, Tanner seeing no BYU heads turn (as well as Michigan corner heads turn) took the ball and ran with it. LB for Michigan were in a gap assignment with play action. Smart run by Tanner, but a bad sign is that BYU WR were not turning heads.

This graphic is rather disturbing considering Michigan was forcing BYU in 3rd and long all day long. Looking at film MORE of a shorter, mid route package (flat, slant, comeback, curl, dig) would of proved more effective. Adding a TE to this package would also greatly assisted in lew of RB injuries. TE could come out of the backfield on a slant , flat or out route.

Michigan TE really showed BYU how to use them in short/mid routes. Even in a double TE set, they were effecive.

Another thing with man coverage on BYU WR, throwing a crossing route short/long field side with a TE is effective. If this means putting BYU in 3rd and short sets, then BYU chances are so much better (as shown with previous graphic). These slight adjustments to the overall route package greatly helps a young QB.

On the 3rd and long, BYU WR didn't turn their heads, ball was thrown by Tanner (going to Mitch) and had Mitch seen and raised his hands that would of greatly assisted BYU. Of course, WR have to catch the ball (and confident) that if they would of simply turned their head and made that catch, confidence would of changed and given BYU better hope.

If you also noticed, Michigan LB were blitzing early in the game, so space was there for even a slant route instead of just fades to Mitch. Those small and simple things.

Two major issues I had with the game.

1. Oline got played

2. BYU WR just played soft, didn't use timing routes (head turning quickly) and lazy separation from Michigan corners.

Obiviously these numbers have changed so it will be interesting to see how BYU attacks UConn defense. UConn will try and go man, but I can easily see and wouldn't be surprised if Anae throws a lot more mid range routes from the route tree.

I do expect a BYU victory and a month of BYU football is what this team needs right now. Improve 3rd down conversion during the month of Oct will mean that BYU offense is adjusting, figuring things out and that Tanner is getting more comfortable. I would also give Tanner more info, because he can process it and make those short/mid throws as he has the touch. All starts with the LOS like all games then goes out from there.

BYU finishes Oct 4-0...they have the talent to do so.
