Even then that's not always enough.
My neighbors house got broken into this morning. (South Utah County) That was after the guy had tried to break into the house next door to his and couldn't. They broke a window at the first house and then moved onto the next. Found an open window in the garage.
At around 6:00 my neighbor woke up to someone walking into his son's room. Still somewhat asleep he walked into his son's room to check it out and found a guy on his son's floor looking under the bed for stuff to steal. He and the guy ended up fighting, falling down the stairs before the guy was able to get out the door.
Cops caught the guy just down the road and ended up tazing him.
The intruder had gone around the house and collected a bunch of their possessions. Had made a pile of it. Witnesses from the first house said that he had help. There were two cars parked in their driveway when they called the cops.
The guy had used meth about an hour before this had all happened. Was just recently released form Prison.
Pretty scary stuff.
