Ute fans, RES, assault, and my personal struggle with rivalry bitterness
I took my 7 year old son to RES for the Max Hall interceptfest. I'd been to the hill as a visiting fan before; but this was my first visit under the culture of disrespect, bigotry, and violence fostered under the Urban regime.
We endured disgusting insults, mostly of a sexual and religious nature throughout the game, had beer poured on us, and received a stream of "inadvertent" shoulder bumps and pushes in the back while walking on the concourse.
Near their end, I took my son to the bathroom, and while washing my hands turned my head to the urinal to find 5 drunk ute fans harassing and urinating on my 7 year old son.
I pushed them off, was punched and kicked for my trouble. I took my sobbing son to report the incident to the stadium police officer and was met with a shoulder shrug. He recommended that we leave.
My son attended his first BYU football game since the incident last year. He no longer cares about football or spectator fan experiences.
I know that Utah is a natural attraction to fans and disgusting human beings like those that assaulted my son and I. This I accept and understand.
But my bitterness remains, not because of these fans; but because of good otherwise decent humans that belong to the Utah fan base, both Mormon and non-Mormon, who predominately look the other way, and by non-action: condone, permit, and encourage abhorrent behavior that should be embarrassing and frightening to any fanbase.
I acknowledge the idiots that belong to our fan base. But our idiots don't pee on 7-year olds.
I'm thankful for Kalani. The rivalry needs him. But I will NEVER cheer for Utah.
