Im not an insider. I do follow recruiting pretty closely, but don't have much more in terms of resources than most of you (I'm guessing). The commitments we have so far do not indicate anything super impressive. It seems in line with what we have seen in previous years since going independent. The ones we are still waiting on, though, could take the 2017 class from good to great. Here is how I see this class shaking out:
* Rankings per 247sports. Disclaimer (I'm not including all offers; just the ones where BYU is a realistic possibility. I'm sure I may be missing some others)
J. Tufele, 4* DT - Utah (Most of us will not find this surprising; doesn't mean it still won't sting a little bit. Guy is a monster and the Utes just keep restocking that D Line shelf)
C. Ah You, 4* DB - BYU (UCLA believed by many to be the favorite...but Kalani and hometown BYU do just enough to win this stud DB.)
L. Tuifua, 4* DL - BYU (Kalani beats out an impressive list of PAC12 and Michigan to reel in the Oregon decommit)
O. Martin, 4* WR - Notre Dame (Not sure how close BYU ever was with Martin, but the fact that they were the only non Midwest school in serious consideration shows how much he liked Kalani, Detmer and staff)
A. Tofa, 3* DL - UCLA (BYU loses a close battle with PAC12 for another talented in-state DL)
M. Unuota, 3* OL - BYU (Would be a fantastic get for BYU this year. UVa and PAC12 going hard after him though, so its not going to be easy)
T. Pututau, 3* WR - BYU (Kalani continuing to show SLC can be cougar recruiting country)
A. Vimahi, 3* DL - USC (Appears to have built strong relationships with former staff as UVA is right up there. In the end, USC gets him though)
J. Lolohea, 3* DL - Utah (Tough battle ending with Lolohea staying in state, just for the wrong school)
L. Damuni, 3* LB - Stanford (Stanford on standout LDS players in UT: "Veni. Vidi. Vici.")
D. Gunter, 3* WR/DB - BYU (Unless something changes, its down to BYU, Hawaii and a few in MWC. Would be a nice get)
N. Ford, 3* OL - Cal (Nevada decommit got a few late PAC12 offers, has held BYU offer for a while)
V. Bates, 3* WR - Oregon St. (Talented WR out of CA, not sure how close BYU really is but loses out in the end)
T. Asemota, 2* WR - BYU (It's a sneaky get as he is a recent decommit from Oregon St. and Kalani was quick to get BYU inserted at the top of his list. A 6'4 WR we may all be familiar with soon)
Taking into account all the incoming transfers, I'd say this 2017 class rounds up to be pretty solid. Kalani/Tuiaki really want to get their prints on that Dline. It's tough to compete with Utah in that regard, but Kalani may be the perfect person to start turning the tables a bit, based on his background. LBs and DBs are pretty well stocked right now, but one thing I continue to love is how we'll be seeing athletes being recruited and not specific positions. Kalani (and Lamb) should do a great job of recruiting athletes who are a bit smaller, but much faster than the typical mold for a given position group. And then build them over time. The above predictions are cautiously optimistic, obviously. Should be exciting to see how it plays out.
